Anal Sex Safety: Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’re thinking about engaging in anal sex for the first time, you probably have some questions about how to do it safely.

The amount of people who have anal sex has been increasing, yet some people still consider it taboo to openly discuss. We want you to you to live your best, safest sex life, so we’re here to provide you with some basic anal sex safety information and tips.

Generally, anal sex is safe, as long as you maintain good communication with your partner and follow these important anal sex safety tips:

  • Use protection

You might not intially think you need protection during anal sex, but protection is a big part of a safe anal experience. Sexually transmitted diseases can be transmitted via anal sex, and the lining of the anal canal is actually much thinner than those of the vaginal canal, making bacteria more likely to penetrate through.

Keep in mind that pregnancy is still a slight concern with anal sex, since semen can easily drip into the vagina from the anus. It’s not likely, but not impossible, so always make sure you have at least one method of protection in place. When using a condom, if you switch from anal to vaginal sex, replace the condom so bacteria isn’t transmitted. Always remember that birth control pills, IUDs, injections, and rings do not provide protection from STDs.

  • Choose lubes designed for anal

Having anal sex without lube is like driving a car without tires. Trust us, you will not like it. Plenty of lube is necessary for an enjoyable anal experience, but not all lube is created equally. Be sure to choose a lubricant that is specifically designed for anal play. This will ensure it’s safe around the sensitive tissues of your anus.

  • Only use toys with a wide base

Unlike the vagina, the anal canal is essentially ‘endless.’ It connects directly to rectum, which connects to the colon. The colon then connects to the intestines. Always use toys with a wide base to make sure they don’t enter the anal canal fully. The base of the toy should always rest on or around your sphincter. Butt plugs and other anal toys are designed with this in mind!

  • Clean well before and after

Cleanliness tends to be a huge cause for concern when it comes to anal sex, and rightfully so. Your anus contains bacteria. Because of that, you want to be sure to clean the area thoroughly both before and after. Mild soap and water work, but there are also douches and enemas that you can try if you’d prefer. Never put a toy or a penis into the vagina from the anus without cleaning it thoroughly first.

If fingers will be involved, make sure nails are cut short and kept very clean. You can also use finger cots, rubber gloves, or a condom to keep things safe and sanitary.

  • Try anal training

One way to make sure your behind is ready for anal sex is through anal training. Essentially, you get the mind and body ready for anal play slowly and gradually through a process of gradual introductions.

Anal sex can be a fun, safe way to experience pleasure as long as you take the proper precautions. As with any new sexual experience, take your time and talk with your partner to set boundaries and make sure you’re both comfortable.
